Installing Linux on a Gateway M685 - a clue is found

Looks like I'm running the same chipset hardware that Apple chose for its 20 inch Intel iMac. The important thing to remember is I don't have Mac OS X and EFI to contend with. I guess I can be thankful for little things. Anyway, there is a howto documenting the steps required to get the iMac to dual-boot Linux. There's the telling little patch that includes "PATA support for the SATA controller" that needs to be applied to a 2.6.16 kernel. Now all I need to do is read a bit more during my next break and see just how much more difficult all this can get.
